A bit less flashy

Having removed all the flash metal from the castings, I finally found time to paint up a 'test' figure for the Austrian Uhlans. I found him just a little bit tricky but got there in the end. I've painted him as a trooper of the 1st Uhlans adhering as closely as possible to the Hinton Hunt painting instruction guide.

AN.85 Austrian Uhlan (Lancer, mounted) charging.

I've also managed to fill in the gaps in the ranks of the 51st Gabriel Spleny regiment that were created by the transfer of their grenadiers to the combined grenadier battalion. I didn't have any Hungarian figures so have used the equivalent Austrian infantry figure with a painting conversion. The Austrian figure is almost identical except for the bushy moustache modelled on the Hungarian version.

The six figures on the left (front two ranks) are the additions painted to blend in with the existing ones painted back in 2008 (yikes!).

So as you can see, it's still all go here on the Austrian front with hopefully more to come soon!

The uhlan is rather spiffing, although he looks a bit snooty to me - he'll need to be careful, pride come before a fall and the Frenchies will be out to trip him up.
As for the Splenys, a great match, you shouldn't have told us which they were and let us guess.

Thanks Rob, I can’t believe that it’s 17 years since I painted the original unit of Splenys…

Lovely looking Uhlan, he looks great a unit of them on the table should be very impressive. Nice regiment too, they look great with their bushy moustaches.

Thanks Donnie, moustaches on Hungarians seems obligatory!

Handsome painting there! Your brushwork continues to spur me on with my own efforts here in the grand duchy.

Kind Regards,

Lovely painting, and the cavalryman has had a perfect flashectomy. Impressive.

Great to see the photos. The colonel will be pleased to receive the drafts bringing his regiment back to strength. Your uhlan is in marked contrast to the handful that I am painting who are all khakis and gas masks! Your man is a much brighter individual.

Me too - only another 11 to go…

Thanks Tony.

Thanks Stephen, you could always gloss varnish the khaki for a brighter finish!

That's the spirit...probably schnapps. This will be another magnificent Habsburg mounted regiment. Will they all ride pitch black steeds?

What a splendidly colorful uniform and a beautiful casting to show it off. That will be a remarkable looking unit on the table!

The horse is actually dark brown but doesn't show too well in the photo. Marcus Hinton says "Brown for the whole regiment except trumpeters".

Thanks David, I hope so!
