I've just returned from a week in Paris with Mrs S. This was the first time I've ever been unless you count Disneyland in the 90s with the kids (but I really don't think you can). I was very very impressed with the city possibly helped by the fact that the sun shone every day. I won't bore you with my holiday snaps other than I know you'd like to see the Napoleonic related ones!

Well blow me down with a feather if I didn't come across the great man's coat and hat at Fontainebleau. Nice satchel too!

And this was his austere camp bed.

While this is his bling real bed. I'd quite like steps to get up into my own bed these days.

Also at Fontainebleau (which incidently was much less busy than Versailles) is the room where he signed the abdication, although possibly not at that actual table.

Napoleon's tomb. I thought the whole site seem really uncared for, it was very dirty and dusty and generally had bad vibes - not what I was expecting.

I've always liked this picture so it was nice to see it for real - annoying that I was photobombed by an old git!

Franconi the circus rider - the original at the Louvre.

Another favourite picture of mine also on display at the Louvre - Napoleon at Eylau.
Would I ever go back - oui!

That cannot be the real hat, I bought Boney's real hat off a french bloke in the 90's. It's in the wardrobe somewhere...
Paul, back in the 80s I knew a couple who swore they had the Holy Grail in their bedroom wardrobe, I think they were regularly smoking something though…
I think there may (genuinely) be a hat of Napoleon’s in Dalmeny House just outside Edinburgh. It claims to have the best collection of Napoleonic artefacts outside of France. The Earl of Roseberry was a big fan. Sadly, it is no longer open to the public.
Goya
Super - excellent post. Ah - the old abdication room - if there's anything I despise, it's ingratitood...
Thanks for the info Goya - incidentally I saw one of your paintings in the Louvre…
Thanks Tony - abdicate? I will not, I will not, I WILL NOT, NOT, NOT!!!
Thanks for sharing the photos, but please, ‘Franconi’? I find that very disrespectful to a valiant, if not brilliant, man. The Eylau painting is one of my favourites, a much better outfit than that in the King of Naples painting. I really must paint my Murat figures some day soon.
I'm not jealous. Really. I'm not.
Well, ahem Rob - it was Napoleon that called him that not me!
Of course not Bob…

Well, yes, exactly...
Even Murat's horse seems to be saying, "What the flegnog are you wearing buddy"! Jealous that you are able to hop the channel and see such treasures.
Yes David and quite strange that I’d never visited before.
This post brought out some wonderful wit from those who commented! :)
Some loverly photos from a ripper trip. Shame to hear that the tomb is looking shabby. I still have the image in mind from a fortunate trip in 1980 (did not get to Fountainebleau though). That's why one never goes back...?! :)
Best wishes, James
