Empress’ Dragoons Quiz

Continuing on my Imperial Guard theme I thought it was time to expand the Guard cavalry. As you may remember my only Guard cavalry unit is the combined Horse Grenadiers and Polish Lancers which is hardly an historical unit. My aim is to produce a heavy cavalry unit comprised of half Horse Grenadiers and half Empress’ Dragoons and a light unit made up of Polish Lancers and Eclaireurs.

This is my test figure for the Guard Dragoons FN/60 Empresses Dragoon (Mounted charging). I used the Hinton Hunt painting instructions for guidance along with Wellington Man’s blog for help with the usual detail conundrums (a bit sneaky I know but Matt has done the hard work for me!).

There are a couple of subtle differences between the Hinton Hunt painting instructions and Matt’s version so see if you can spot them (no prizes if you do though).

Very nice - and I am definitely liking the gloss finish.

Nice one - but why put Polish Guard Lancers with Eclaireurs rather than with the Dutch (Red) Lancers - the latter being everyone's favourite Guard cavalry?

Good looking Empress Dragoons. I look forward to seeing the completed squadron.

Well you've got me with the quiz. I can see the difference in the coat roll [?] grey or red but the only other thing i can spot is that one rides a bay and the other a chestnut. What am I missing?

Nice painting.

Rob - this is out of necessity as I don't have enough Eclaireurs for a full unit.

We'll spotted - mine has a grey cloak on top of the portmanteaux and brown scabbard, Matt's have a red cloak and black scabbard. My horse is painted with Foundry chestnut but Matt's is much more convincing!

The Green looks spot on. What did you use for it?

I have 3 regiments of JC recast Guard cavalry in the to do pile including a unit of Empress Dragoons. Yours test figure has come out very nicely and the finished unit will look very good.

Lovely brushwork there! Which green did you use for the tunic? It looks almost like the old Humbrol British Rifle Green.

A fine test figure Ian, and the varnish really makes those colours sparkle. Excellent painting.
