I won’t Boer you with the details

With Vintage Leipzig now rapidly approaching I am beavering away painting up… Boers…eh what? Please, you’ll just have to humour me and take a look at my little side show blog here (if you haven’t already) and perhaps leave a comment there telling me to pull myself together and get back to the Hinton Hunts.

Well I have actually been painting some – six Prussian Jagers to be precise. The idea is to expand my existing unit of 18 to a full 24 figure unit. It became pretty obvious some time back that my individually based skirmisher figures were never going to get a look in on the wargame table as they are too fiddly to use in the large games we have been playing. Reluctantly I decided to increase the unit size and will be rebasing them for use as close order units but still with the capability to deploy as skirmishers if I wish.

This does have an upside though as I have 5 units of skirmishers which means if I paint just 30 figures I will increase the order of battle significantly without having to go through the tedium of painting 24 figures at a time. After the Prussians I will turn my attention to the Austrian Tyrolean Jagers in the hope of having them ready for the great day.

Excellent paint job as usual! Just wondering what the guy on the right of the picture is aiming at? Either the French have a balloon observation post or the skirmish line has flushed a pheasant which would add nicely to the ration pot after the battle!

Dave - yes that's a classic Hinton Hunt pose shooting high but woe betide any Frenchmen stood on a hill!

If there were a charging French 'Hoozar' an inch in front of him, might be a headshot.

Great figures anyway.

Ross - yes, or if he was stood in a ditch he might be in with a chance.

A very cunning plan, Mr Stryker! Lovely troops, as always.

Matt - I'm glad you like the way I'm thinking. This will also mean the 10th legere finally seeing some action in their fancy clothes!

I think that the muskets should. be pushed down nto a more level pose. I wonder if Marcus Hinton dexigned them shooting upwards fir ease of casting?

I popped my head into Roy's garage today and there are hordes of both French and Austrians on the go. so time to get painting and resist the temptation to be side-tracked!

Stuart - you are probably right as it's a bit unfair to let Roy shoulder all the work. I'm still hoping to be able to contribute 16 foot and 9 cavalry on the great day and if course Poniatowski himself!

I am up to 20 battalions of Austrians based to M&M. That's probably too many for Leipzig, so perhaps sme will be held back to play at Vintage Wagram!

Roy - that really is a very big force, have you had these figures hanging around for a long time or are they recent purchases? Either way it is impressive.

As with most f my stuff Ian I bought it years ago when you could buy armies at a sensible price. Some I have acquired recently, of course. There are couple of units of DK in there and a landwehr unit that I had converted from a Prussian Landwehr marching I recall. and some Claytons as well a quite lot of HH originals. One cuirassier that I found to make up a unit of 12 was painted by me at a hillside campsite overlooking Vienna in 1977 , six of them were painted by Peter Bateman years ago, two are the rather thin DKs and the others are left over from the Austrian force I have on General de Brigade bases. If one collects assiduously for 40 years or more you can amass quite a lot of little lead men. One of the Landwehr units was converted from French voltigeurs. in greatcoat marching with their heads replaced with Jager heads with Corsehut. I think Peter made the bodies into German riflemen, Baden perhaps, using French shakos. Now what happened to the French bodies??
Over the years I have bought some good stuff and some compkete tat. Once you could get HH on Bring and Buys, which was good because you could inspect the unit and see how authentic they were. Believe me there are a lot of rather poor pirates that were made in the 60s and 70s and, of course some rather good ones. Buying on Ebay is much more of a lottery.

Roy - I'm very much looking forward to seeing them all!
