Hanau 1813 – coming soon

Roy and I got together yesterday to fight a game based on the Battle of Hanau 1813. It was just the two of us this time so the idea was to keep things small. Well, that was the idea but we still managed to put upwards of 600 Hinton Hunt figures onto a 6’ x 5’ area of table.

Roy commanded the Austro-Bavarian army (yes, he really has managed to knock up an entire Bavarian army since we played Vintage Waterloo) and I commanded the French. The forces were a bit unbalanced with the allies outnumbering the French but I think this helped to contribute to what turned out to be a most enjoyable game.

We played for a full eight turns and the game had a satisfying conclusion – a full battle report will follow!

Thanks Paul - I don't like Bavarians as much as I used to!

Ian was a sporting gentleman and allowed me to have superior numbers. He dud have two guard battalions, but these were not engaged , plus the French had A class light infantry and Swiss and they also had some A class cavalry. Also we did the movement nban 'initiative ' basis so the winner of an initiative throw could decide to go first or second with charges and movement and Napoleon was given a plus one on the throw......which is only fair as in the real battle the boys in blue and the kaiserlichs were distinctly lacking in enterprise..
All in all the Allies had the advantage of numbers, but then Ian threw one wicked dice.......and all the dice were from my stack so it must have been the mantle of the French Ogre that gave him his luck. Numbers, as you will see, did eventually tell. To quote Stalin,
'Quantity has a quality allits own'.

To b far, many f the Bavarians had been painted by Peter Walker some time ago and it was a matter of basng them up. Typically much of this was done the night before.

Some great conversions there, by the looks of it!

Matt - Yes the conversion master has been at it big time. They'll be some close ups in the battle report.

I've always ha a soft spot for the Bavarians - lovely uniforms and an army of a size where you can actually justify fielding a few of the special units. Nice flags too.

The only thing finer than a wargame played is a wargame played to a conclusion. Well done one and all.

Pleased for you IAN that your having regular War Games with your Hinton-Hunts...giving the Regiments each a Battle History too is all important and enjoyable. Well Done.

Funny you should say that Kev I was just thinking I should start a roll of honour on the blog!

May I ask what rules your are using? I might find the answer on your blog but I admit I have not read through it completely just yet.
