General Winter

Last night when I went out to the Hinton Hut for a painting session the thermometer was registering minus one outside and plus one inside. Even after an hour of the heater running it was only up to fourteen degrees. This morning there was an inch of snow, General Winter has arrived.

It's a 10 yard dash from the back door to the Hut (although clearly, looking at the footprints I don't always make it).

I did however manage to prise open my frozen fingers just enough to put the finishing touches to the last two Austrian Dragoons. I like how this unit has turned out, the yellow and red really pop against the stark white. I just need to base them now.

Austrian Dragoons, perfectly camouflaged for the current weather conditions.

Next, I will be painting something red as there is more than enough white around here at the moment.

  1. Beautifully vibrant colours Ian, and very crisp painting. You are getting pretty good at this :)

Not keen on that white stuff though!

  2. Thanks Lee, I'm happy that the style of painting fits the figures and I get a lot of enjoyment from painting them that way. This will be our fourth winter here and although you become more acclimatised over time it is never exactly fun!

  3. Where are you? The wife came in saying it was snowing in East Anglia but I thought you were Waay Ooop North?

Wherever, those are beautifully clean paint jobs - and white uniforms always leap out at you from the wargames table although that probably means they'll attract a lot of artillery fire...

I've tried to do this clean style but my painting is so untidy (can't paint a straight line) I endlessly have to cover up bloopers - that's why I disguise it with a more impressionist style with shading.

  4. Those are just brilliant, and finished off in freezing weather no less. I will try and whine less when my basement hobby room gets cold from here on out. We have had sub freezing temps in Nashville over night, but the basement never seems to get too bad, despite the drafty garage doors. I don't really have the luxury of a heater down there so if it stays cold too long I generally have to take a break or bundle up!

  5. Glad your work was not a Major Disappointment!

The red paint scheme sounds very interesting.

  9. Matt, the red will of course be British!

  10. They're wonderful, Ian - and very Christmassy!

  11. The red will be British? I reckon you need some Danes, that might incentivise that lurker, Bernadotte, to get stuck in next time.

  12. I am not sure I could paint in freezing temperatures. The figures look great and I like the crispness of the white and clean details.

Another British unit so soon. I dont know about you but I am still recovering from the one I did this summer.

  14. Thanks James, there's something about all those massed white uniforms that is appealing!

  15. Cheers WM, not quite so Christmassy this morning as all the snow has disappeared as quickly as it came!

  17. By the footprints, at least you are keeping the birds fed!

  18. Very nice indeed Ian...
I have been steering away from Austrians up till now... but there is something nice about White Uniforms...
We have only had a bit of vey wet snow in the Lead Belt... but it’s certainly getting a lot colder...

    All the best. Aly

  19. Jeffers, most the footprints are made by the dog probably chasing the birds!

  20. Aly, fortunately it is a bit warmer now and the white stuff has gone.

  21. One just can't have enough white. These fellows really are beautifully crisp. One of my favourite figures. Well done, sir.
