Ensigns of the 49th Foot

Believe it or not, although I now have several British foot units in my collection, up until now I have never painted a Hinton Hunt King’s colour or Regimental colour. I managed to dodge this by getting Matt to paint the flags for The Guards, and Lee those of the Cambridgeshires. However, I can dodge no more and the time has finally come to man up with the Hertfordshires.

Left BN/14 Ensign King's Colour Bearer, holding colours & sword and right BN/13 Ensign Regiment Colour.

They were quite labour intensive (sorry about that Matt and Lee) especially painting over a black undercoat as I always do. I’m happy with the way they turned out although I won’t be rushing to do any more in a hurry.

I’ve also completed another 5 infantrymen bringing the total figures painted so far up to 8 so I’m a third of the way through.

  1. That's a lovely shade of green.
The colours look really good - I'm not a fan of cast on flags but those almost like foil ones.
How many flank company figures will you battalion have?

  2. Rob, the green is a bit lighter in real life but does look good. These cast-on flags are nice and the etched designs superb, they must have taken a lot of work so no wonder Marcus never did any for the other nations! My British units consist of centre companies only so there are no flankers.

  3. I'll echo the previous comment about the shade of green for the regimental standard. It's lovely. You've done yeoman's work painting everything.

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

  4. Lovely job Ian. I really like those engraved flags, HH certainly knew his craft. Going to be another magnificent battalion.

  5. Those flags are lovely and I echo Robs comments on the vividness of the Green.

You are cracking on with your unit where as I have been side tracked by some 10mm ACW types. Your post is a timely reminder to get back on track with my KGL unit.

  6. Thanks chaps!

Mark, if you're going to be distracted then ACW is a good excuse!

  7. My efforts at painting flags have been a disaster and I dream of being able to do this! Praise the Lord for Napflags...

  10. Lovely looking standards...
I remember painting some of these rather top heavy chaps as a lad...
We never used to put our toys on multiple bases so they spent most of their time face down on the floor...

    All the best. Aly

  11. Jeffers, these ones aren't so bad as the etched designs on them are fairly easy to follow!

  12. Aly, ah that reminds me of the flag bearer for the Airfix WW2 Japanese infantry as he spent a lot of time lying on the ground too!

  13. I detest the cast on flags! They are one of those bits of Hinton Hunt stuff where tge accuracy of tge figure meets the practicality of the medium. So, the lances on one piece castings are like pointy tree trunks ( carving them off is a pain) , the lances on the separate riders are so fragile and bendy and yet how many modern manufacturers would cast on the carrying loop, the pennon and the butt bucket?? . The spears on Norman knights are so kinked that it looks as though they stopped at a hawthorn bush to get them made! At least Hinton got it right with the muskets and bayonets , making them robust enough to stand some handling. The flags are impossibly thick in order to get them cast and they are as thick as duvets and unbalance the figure.
I replace with paper, printed ones, its not as nice as Wellington Man’s tinplate wonders, but it does the job.
Your painting of these weighty ganbers abd their heroic gearers is, however, a marvel to be hold and a true tribute to an original figure.

  15. Your first attempt at flags Ian? You'll have to do more as they look brilliant!

  16. Ah Roy, how can you not like telegraph pole lances and cast-on flags! Next you'll be wanting to replace swords!

  17. James, my first at the British flags, I have done quite a few of the French ones!

  18. I salute your determination to have one properly equipped battalion. I have yet to achieve this. Whilst I agree entirely with Roy, just one stand per British army should be a requirement. It is a glorious green. I’m looking forward to the drummer....

  19. Lovely job, Ian - beautifully done.

    Duvets? Come on...

  20. You are a true devotee to the integrity of the figure to take on such a challenge. The only times I have tried to paint a cast on flag they have been such a failure that I immediately brought out the clippers! My hat is off to you sir!

  21. Roy, sadly there will be no fifer for this unit!
