Drummer for the 49th Foot

Not much painting time this week but I did manage to paint the drummer for the Hertfordshire regiment. I like the finished look with the reverse colour green of his coat which will stand out nicely against the ranks of red - I’m sure the Voltigeurs will appreciate that too!

The figure is a vintage casting of BN/12 Drummer (playing).

  1. Don't worry the green will blend in with foliage at a distance, besides it would be unmanly to shoot at the drummers, officers yes, but drummers, no!
Don't want to be picky, but is he wearing a backpack? Something that looks like a rolled greatcoat seems to be there, if so he's missing some of the straps for the backpack. All personal choice, but if you're anything like me it's only when I've finished and varnished the figures that I realise I've missed out painting something and have do more retouching.

  2. That will be down to Marcus’s subtle sculpting...

A splendid colour combination... beautifully painted..

    All the best. Aly

  3. You're right there Aly as the straps aren't sculpted at all!

  4. Having a drummer in reversed colours looks good amongst the sea of red. Unfortunately the drummer of my 1st KGL only gets a bog standard red one.

  5. Another little stunner Ian, that's a wonderfully vibrant green. Funny enough he appeared on my screen about 75mm scale and I did not notice the lack of backpack straps, although I did admire the work on the drum, very fine indeed.

  7. As we all know from the Film, one does not kill drummers. Unless one is a gunner, of course, and then it’s the fault of those who put them at the head of the columns...great painting, Ian, subtlety or no. He’s just what I was hoping to see.

  8. Lee, I'm not sure my painting would survive 75mm, however this figure is on the small end of 20mm!

  9. Nigel, I'll make sure to keep him in the rear ranks...

  10. Very nice IAN- splendid Drummer. I'm going to try painting up 18mm (with a few Drummers0 - if they turn out half as good as your Drummer I'll be a happy chappy. Cheers. KEV.

  14. I love a bright green! Sadly, for my green AWI regiment I chose the 63rd who have darker green. Serves me right for following an orbat!

  15. Thanks Jeffers, the Hinton Hunt painting instructions specified medium/dark green for this unit so my green may actually be a bit bright but it looks nice!
