Fortunately Goya has come to the rescue by offering to paint up 6 S-Range figures to make up the numbers if I can get my own tally to 18. Another 6 figures from me should be achievable I hope and the resulting temporary unit should look quite interesting.
Whilst painting the current batch I noticed that there are some figures aligned sideways on their bases rather than diagonally as they should be (see the figure in the centre at the front). All these figures are Clayton castings and all came from the same source a few years ago. Presumably these are just casting variations as the figures themselves are identical.
Even your landwehr feature stunning brushwork!

ReplyDeleteYour variants look identical to the DK Landwehr in my collection. My theory is that DC occasionally used slightly modified DKs along with HHs when he made his production moulds. Sometimes the only things changed were the bases, which were widened and thickened a bit. If you look carefully at the bases on quite a few of DC's figures (particularly the non-HH variants) you can see the outline of the original DK base quite clearly!
I know what you mean about the impact of football and the weather on painting but I'm curious to know what have panned for late July and why Landwehr are so crucial?

ReplyDeleteWM - that makes sense what you say about the DKs. Some of these did have square bases with the outline of the HH rounded corners visible (which I clipped off). All had the bases marked with the HH code in the same way so were clearly manufactured in the same place.

ReplyDeleteYour Landwehr are fine looking fellows. Nice paint job. I was able to recruit some Landwehr yesterday, though they are going to have to wait a bit for their uniforms. I need to paint some French infantry first. I see that the “Nazgul Dragoons” still loom in the background.

ReplyDeleteI do like the Blue you have used for the uniform and it looks more vibrant than typical Prussian blue.
Never mind the blue, how goes their musketry practice? Nice work, Ian and, as we have noted before, these may have become the must have figures of the HH range. Look forward to seeing their Death Star performance....

ReplyDeleteMark - I use Foundry 'Deep Blue' as I think the Prussian blue makes the figures too dark when viewed at several feet away.

I have not yet been to Scotland, but from what I know, I would have to agree that the temperature in Scotland is much preferable to Spain’s (hot and sweltering).
ReplyDeletePaul - I'm not sure how many units we will be fielding as Goya is organising this one. I know all my Prussian infantry will be involved but the main force will be from Goya's S-range collection.

Ah S range, Minifigs strategic move to dominate the market back in the early 70s . A good strategy, because they were cheap and not very detailed, so easy to paint. i think they did kill off the smaller manufacturers and even those such as Phoenix that did not have big enough ranges. Sadly I could never love the big shoulders and heads and all the stances in the same advancing position. Suffce to say only an army of bodybuilders could look like that!
