Yesterday I took delivery of some Hinton Hunt Chevaulegers, a very generous gift from across the pond. The figures are not vintage or even Clayton ones but reproductions dating from the 1990’s during the period Hinton Hunt was not readily available. I’m really impressed with the quality of these and I would easily have thought they were vintage figures if I hadn’t been told as the mold plug marks, HH markings and general feel and heft of the metal seem perfect.

I’m quite excited to have the Saxons in particular as I greatly admired the unit Roy fielded at
Vintage Leipzig. This gives me a rare chance to field some French allied cavalry in red as I chose to paint my guard lancers in Polish blue. I did also wonder if the Bavarians could be painted as Swedes to give my Swedish contingent a mounted arm – any ideas?
You must paint them as Bavarians, Ian! If they do half as well as the battalion I painted you will be ever victorious!
ReplyDeleteMatt - that's a good point!
ReplyDeleteI would have thought they would be ok for later Swedish Light Dragoons given the shako shape
ReplyDeleteWhat a windfall! Whatever colors you ultimately choose, I am sure you'll do them painterly justice.
ReplyDeleteBest Regards,
Stokes
Even painted as Bavarians, you could attach them to your Swedish army on occasion.
ReplyDeleteAh that sounds like a good idea Bavaro-Swedes!
ReplyDeleteThe detail on the figures does look crisp. These will paint up nicely.
ReplyDeleteThe detail is very good - the molds must have been made from some decent production castings.
ReplyDeleteGiven the colour they have been undercoated and the OPC charging position they have the look of mini-Spencer Smith plastics.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as if they have been dipped in something as the coating covers the underside of the base. I'll have to try one to see if I van strip it otherwise may just have to clean them and paint as is.
ReplyDeleteKeep them as Bavarians! As it happens I may have started a small Bavarian wing and I can shamelessly steal, sorry, replicate your research!
ReplyDeleteBavarian's eh Matt? Sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteFor Swedish cavalry use the Russian chevauxleger in kiver . John C nakes a nice figure for that.
ReplyDeleteAlternatively the HH french early hussar in mirliton as illustrations show the Morner hussars in a natty blue and yellow outfit with mirliton even through 1812.

ReplyDeleteJust scrumptious.
Roy - I knew you'd have the answer!
ReplyDeleteIts a pity you moved North Ian otherwise we would hav been able to put on a Smorgasbord of Swedes versus Danes, with Ikea field fortifications and G Plan limbers and caissons.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever seen figures undercoated in brown Ian, but I can kind of see how it would work as a shade colour for horses and even reds and fleshtones! You use the term 'reproductions' which is interesting, the castings look very crisp, and I guess with HH out of production there was no legal implications to somebody doing this in the past?
ReplyDeleteI have just received the latest Hinton Hunt recast list from John Cunningham
ReplyDeleteand amongst the many new additions I notice that BVN44 is now listed.
Mark - I haven't seen the list yet buy had heard they are on it.
