The view of the ridge from the French lines was also interesting as the land looked completely flat and the rank and file must have thought the attack would be a piece of cake. They must have been demoralised to find the dip down as they advanced. The mud is horrible and claggy as described in contemporary accounts. It was really annoying to see the Lion's Mound plonked down on such an important part of the battlefield, there's nothing nice about it and a column (like Nelson's) would have been a much better idea if they really felt they needed to do something for The Prince of Orange. Apparantly there was a suggestion to demolish the Mound in Victorian times but the locals objected as they thought it would ruin the tourist trade!Strykerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875985959507775409.post-16471264003999307882017-03-15T09:31:20.241+00:002017-03-15T09:31:20.241+00:00Great post, Ian, I really feel I've had a tour...Great post, Ian, I really feel I've had a tour of the field. Particularly taken by your observations on the ridge and the mud. I do wonder how far the mound has changed the nature of the ridge and the spur that the Garde attacked. Thanks. I know some wargamers use 15mm buildings with 20mm but I'm not keen on this for my Hintons. I was thinking of adapting a stylized Hougoumont from an Airfix La Haye Sainte with a bit so scratch building. One problem is that the overall footprint needs to be kept small so it does not completely dominate the table.Strykerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14258922461691204362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875985959507775409.post-53763648392587710462017-03-13T20:19:54.703+00:002017-03-13T20:19:54.703+00:00I have a card one but have no idea who made itI have a card one but have no idea who made itVintage Wargaminghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04251018372867101509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875985959507775409.post-60782663266053273142017-03-13T19:03:24.519+00:002017-03-13T19:03:24.519+00:00FWIW, you mention wanting a 20mm Hougomont..... do...FWIW, you mention wanting a 20mm Hougomont..... do you reckon the Hovels one is any good for 20mm? He must have been a hard man. He lived to colect his medal in 1847, it's now in a museum at Edinburgh castle - bars for I think Fuents, San Sebastian, Vittoria and Salamanca....Iainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01019211742732388369noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875985959507775409.post-51107026826564985492017-03-13T17:57:27.304+00:002017-03-13T17:57:27.304+00:00Ian,
